| | A
little info about yourself (where are you from / retired / line of work): retired
| |
| | Date
of your trip: Every winter for the last 6 years
| | How
many days were you in Mexico? 2- 3 months
| | What
was your destination / what part of Mexico were you traveling in? All of
Mexico except the north west. We especially enjoyed Oaxaca, Guanajuato, the Yucatan
and Chiapas. (Palenque)
| | What
was the purpose of your trip (recreation / work related / other)? Recreation,
and getting away from the cold.
| | How
many people did you travel with? My wife and I.
| | What
kind of vehicle were you driving (Make / Model / etc.)? Nissan pathfinder,
Buick Regal, Astro and Safari van
| | How
did the vehicle handle the trip? All vehicles handled the trips very well
even if the Safari van had over 300,000 km. Minor repairs like an alternator bearing
or a hydraulic pump were really interesting getting those repairs under a tree
for shade and being fed FRESH watermelon.
| | How
were the road conditions? Any specific areas to be aware of? The roads
were different than what we are used to, but we are on holidays and we take our
time, and never drive at night.
| | Did
you have a good time? Always had a good time; Mexicans are very friendly
and they go out of their way to make tourists feel at home as long as we are polite
and try to say few words in their language.
| | Would
you drive to Mexico again? Yes hopefully our health will permit us do so.
| |
| | What
would you do differently next time? Bring less luggage, stop more often
to try and chat and have a coffee in the little villages.
| | What
words of advice do you have for others driving to Mexico / or others who are driving
to a particular destination? Driving is not that different than at home;
take your time, don´t drive at night as not all cars have tail lights and cows, pigs,
horses and burros never have any.
| | What
were some of the highlights of the trip? We would really like to hear about these!
The more descriptions and details, the better! The deserted mining town
of Real de Catorce deserves a amention as the first of the incredible mountain
views in Mexico. Next, the colanial cities San Luis Potosi, San Miguel de Allende;
where we feel like we are in the U:S: or Canada, except for the architecture,
the history, and the view from the top of the hill.
Our favorite city
and area , no doubt is Oaxaca and the valleys centrales. Our favorite spot in
all Mexico for a beer or soft drink is at one of the outside restaurants around
the Zocalo or central park in Oaxaca. Let´s not forget the valleys around the
city for all kinds of crafts. Every town has a different specialty; pottery, rugs,
dolls, paintings ect. The market and church in Tlacolula are something else, but
watch your wallet in the markets.
Chiapas should not be missed either;
the ruins of Palenque are spectacular in the jungle setting
| | Where
did you sleep? Can you recommend a place to stay? Who has time to sleep?
Yes we sleep. We in little hotels along the way, never had a problem to find a
place. We never book ahead, but stop at 4 pm. at the latest to find a hotel preferably
right in the center of town facing the church.
| | Can
you recommend any restaurants? All the little comedors at or near the center
serve good food once we are bold enough to try them . For dining out we suggest
doing that in the bigger cities.
| | Any
other comments...feel free to ramble! THE DRIVE ALL THE WAY TO THE HUATULCO
FROM MAZATLAN SHOULD TAKE ONE WINTER AS IT IS FULL OF BEACHES AND SIGHTS ALONG
THE WAY. ACAPULCO, PUERTO VALLARTA, MANZANILLO, IXTAPA, ARE WELL KNOWN BUT WHEN
DRIVING WE HAVE ACCESS TO HUNDREDS OF BEAUTIFUL BEACHES FILLED WITH CANADIANS
AND AMERICANS FOR THE WINTER. TO NAME A FEW: BARRA DE NAVIDAD, MELAQUE, PLAYA
AZUL, PUERTO ESCONDIDO, PUERTO ANGEL, AND SAN JUAN DE ALIMA ARE ALL SMALL PLACES
THAT HAVE ALL THE SERVICES INCLUDING BEAUTIFUL BEACHES AND SUNSETS. WITH A MINIMUM
OF EFFORT WE CAN DRIVE TO OUR OWN PRIVATE BEACH.
