A
little info about yourself (where are you from / retired
/ line of work):
West Covina, CA. Student/REsearch Specialist |
| | Date
of your trip: February
|
| | How
many days were you in Mexico? 3 Days |
| | What
was your destination / what part of Mexico were you
traveling in?
Rosarito, Ensenada, San Felipe, Puertocitos
|
| | What
was the purpose of your trip (recreation / work related
/ other)?
Weekend getaway: relax, drink, eat, shop, enjoy
Baja's natural beauty.
|
| | How
many people did you travel with?
2 people |
| | What
kind of vehicle were you driving (Make / Model / etc.)?
2004 Toyota Corolla
|
| | How
did the vehicle handle the trip?
Beautiful, I personally drive a chevy but, after
renting this Corolla I'm definately going to trade
in my vehicle for a Toyota. It gave great gas mileage,
smooth ride & less outside noise. When driving
from San Felipe to Puertocitos it was a bit rough
since the road is dirt & gravel. But, it's worth
the drive when you get to the hotsprings.
|
| | How
were the road conditions? Any specific areas to be
aware of?
See above for Puertocitos. As soon as you see
the Puertocitos sign to your righthand side there
will be a gate opening to your left drive through
and follow the road up going towards the bright yellow
house (can't miss it),once you pass the yellow house
stay to your right and keep going, there will be a
parking space and concrete archway. walkdown and there
are the hotsprings. Per the locals the hotsprings
cool down between 3pm-4pm. Driving from Ensenada to
San Felipe (U.S. map shows as highway 3) was a bit
nerve wrecking at first. It is a two lane highway
and it almost feels like you're driving through the
jungles at first but it calms down and gets better.
I RECOMMEND YOU DRIVE THIS ONLY DURING THE DAY. There
is nothing for miles at a time and could be a dangerous
if not scary situation to be in during the night.
|
| | Did
you have a good time?
I had an excellent time. Rosarito is a cool place
to party, ride horses on the beach, shop, eat and
drink in. Ensenada is more Americanized but still
a wonderful place to getaway. It has a greater selection
of name brand items, i.e. colonges, perfumes. San
Felipe has it's party and shopping side but is more
lay back. The water in San Felipe is clear and clean.
Being in San Felipe almost feels like being in Newport
or Huntington Beach (but with cleaner water). All
in all the company you travel with makes it all worth
wild.
|
| | Would
you drive to Mexico again?
Most definately, I try to visit Baja at least once
a month even if its just for half a day.
|
| | What
would you do differently next time?
Rent a Toyota Prius, and drive as far south down highway
1 and just see where i end up. I would love to take
a week or two off and head down to Loreto.
|
| | What
words of advice do you have for others driving to
Mexico / or others who are driving to a particular
destination?
Just map out your destination. Calculate your mileage
and how many mpg your car can go. I would recommend
bringing a couple of gallons of your own gas since
gas in mexico is expensive and sometimes they will
give you back change in pesos. I wouldnt recommend
driving at night.
|
| | What
were some of the highlights of the trip? We would
really like to hear about these! The more descriptions
and details, the better!
In Rosarito we stayed at this motel (not hotel,
trust me you'll notice the difference) across the
street from El Nido restaurant (which i recommend
you stop in and eat at), it's a dark intimate setting
with great food fire cooked, I always order Mojo De
Ojo de Camarones, which means shrimp in garlic butter.
I then dip my handemade to order tortillas in the
garlic butter sauce. umm.. at first it sounds gross
but trust me its delicious. Back to the Motel. it
was a bit ghetto but it only cost $50 dollars and
we were only there for a couple hours. So i guess
it worked out. Driving to Ensenada from Rosarito is
very beautiful. Ensenada has a lot of shops and boutiques.
It's a great place to walk around and shop. You really
cant haggle that much in the higher end stores since
price is as marked. San Felipe is excellent place
to walk along the sea. The Sea of Cortez has clear
waters and the beaches are well kept. When i return
for the summer i would prefer to spend my vacation
on the Sea of Cortez side since the water is warmer
and you can walk out far and the water is still up
to your knees.
|
| | Where
did you sleep? Can you recommend a place to stay?
The motel in Rosarito isnt 5 star or even 1 star
but it's economical and if your only finding a place
to sleep and shower at then this is the place. The
place we stood in San Felipe was the second to the
last street you make a right and its two doors down
from a pizza parlor and a very nice lady rents rooms
out for $25 a day. & it was clean, had cable,
and secured parking.
|
| | Can
you recommend any restaurants?
El Nido in Rosarito. Hotel Calafia on the Rosarito
strip (not highway 1).
|
| | Any
other comments...feel free to ramble!
Baja is a beautiful place to visit and travel
in. I love traveling to Baja and have been since i
was 18. I'm 21 now and in my experiences (4 years,
go figure) it's all about who you travel with. I enjoyed
and loved all the times I've gone down south.
