Date of your trip: November 8-10, 2003-It was still not too cold to take a walk on the beach

How many days were you in Mexico? 2 Days

What was your destination / what part of Mexico were you traveling in?
Rosarito Beach, Baja, Mexico

What was the purpose of your trip (recreation / work related / other)?
We went for a little get-away to do some shopping and party up a little (okay a lot!!)

How many people did you travel with?
one-my boyfriend

What kind of vehicle were you driving (Make / Model / etc.)?
Toyota 4-Runner

How did the vehicle handle the trip?
It was perfect. With the roads that were not on the beaten path not being in the best condition, (which is expected if you're driving in Mexico), you definitely want to drive a car you feel comfortable in. Make sure before you go to get your vehicle checked out for repairs though-that's the last place you want to be stranded in!!!

How were the road conditions? Any specific areas to be aware of?
We took the toll road for the most part, which was in good condition. It has a some nice scenery of the beaches. The only thing was all of the 4-way stop signs when you get into town. You need to take the last exit (which we didn't do) so you can bypass all of the stop and gos.

Did you have a good time?
We had a great time. The nightlife is pretty much a younger crowd, since the drinking age there is 18. But there are lots of clubs to hop around in that are in close proximity to one another. I would recommend for the first timer to go to Papas and Beer. This place is huge!!! Another club we went to was Iggy's right on the beach. Here, they have people who sell you arm bands for like $12.00 a person and it's all you can drink all night long. The cool thing about this place is you can leave, check out some other nightclubs, and come back as many times as you want. They even have a mechanical bull you can ride for free-Yee-Haw!!!

Would you drive to Mexico again?
Absolutely. It helps if someone you're with can speak spanish (like my boyfriend) so we felt totally safe. But we wouldn't recommend driving at night, especially if you aren't on a main road and aren't familiar with the area.

What would you do differently next time?
We would stay at a different hotel. (See Below!!)

What words of advice do you have for others driving to Mexico / or others who are driving to a particular destination?
Make sure you try to read the signs as best you can. Also, sometimes there are road closures, so you need to bring a map with you in case there are any detours you have to make. This happened to us on the way home, and we managed to stumble on a shortcut to the border through Tiajuana. It probabaly saved us an hour or two waiting to get across the border.

What were some of the highlights of the trip? We would really like to hear about these! The more descriptions and details, the better!
The shopping was definitely the highlight of our trip for me. They have a great little open-air bazaar, where you can make deals and buy anything you need (or don't need!!) If you're looking for knock-offs, this is the place to go. Gucci handbags, sunglasses, watches, everything you could want. They have a stylish shirt store where you can buy Guevara shirts for like $13.00 which is unheard of in California. These shirts sell for like 40 to 50 bucks each at department stores, and they aren't even the real thing! The only thing that I didn't like was how Americanized everything was at the Festival Plaza. They had tons of mainstream restaurants that I can find right here at home. If I had wanted sushi, I would have went to Japan!!! If I'm going to Mexico, I want to eat like they do. The taco stands are disappearing!!!

Where did you sleep? Can you recommend a place to stay?
We stayed at the Fiesta Plaza. Now this hotel looks really nice from the outside, it even looked pretty nice online. But the rooms aren't too impressive. For $100.00 a night I'm not expecting 4 star accomodations, but it was just kinda worn-looking. The bedsheets were really thin, and the bathroom was a little frightening. Basically we paid for the location, since it's right next to everything, and we had a specacular view of the ocean. Next time I'll pay the extra 40 bucks and stay at the Rosarito Beach hotel. I might not have a view, but at least I won't be afraid to open my eyes in the morning!! If you stay here, I would recommend you bring along a pair of sandals to walk in while you're in your room. I sure didn't want my bare feet to touch the floor!!!

Can you recommend any restaurants?
There is a restaurant on the corner next to the hotel we stayed at-El Nido. It means "the birdcage" in spanish. This is an excellent sit down restaurant with great Mexican food at great prices. The atmosphere here is wonderful. There are beautiful birds all over the place, waterfalls to look at, a huge bar-they even have a nice patio where you can sit. We loved it so much we had dinner here, and breakfast the next morning-which was delicious. And the service was fantastic. My boyfriend complimented our waiter on his shirt, and he gave us detailed directions to where he purchased it. This is definitely a place to come if you plan on staying in Rosarito.

Any other comments...feel free to ramble!
We had a great time. Next time we come I want to stay longer. The atmosphere is great, and everyone is really friendly. Another must see is going to the Rosarito Beach Hotel and taking a walk on the pier-but make sure you wear comfortable old walking shoes. In Mexico, no one cares about what you have on your feet. I wore some heels and almost broke my ankle!! You also have to have a coco-loco. This is an alcoholic drink that comes in a coconut. Your vacation wouldn't be complete without drinking at least one of these babies!!!(or three or four!!!)
