| | A
little info about yourself (where are you from / retired / line of work): Student
| |
| | Date
of your trip: October 2003
| | How
many days were you in Mexico? 3 Days
| | What
was your destination / what part of Mexico were you traveling in? We drove
to San Felipe, Baja (Norte) for the weekend.
| | What
was the purpose of your trip (recreation / work related / other)? We just
wanted to escape from LA for the weekend. We went to San Felipe to sit on the
beach, drink cervezas, and relax.
| | How
many people did you travel with? 2 - me and my boyfriend
| | What
kind of vehicle were you driving (Make / Model / etc.)? Chevy S-10 Pickup
| |
| | How
did the vehicle handle the trip? Just fine. We slept in the bed of the
truck! | |
| | How
were the road conditions? Any specific areas to be aware of? Mexicali
was a little confusing to drive through because it was our first time, but it
was easy once we knew where to go. The drive to San Felipe was pretty smooth,
but there were a few big potholes to watch out for. Things slowed down a bit becasue
we were stuck behind a truck towing a big boat, and it wasn't easy to pass him
on the narrow 2 lane highway (1 lane each direction).
| | Did
you have a good time? Yeah, it was the perfect relaxing weekend. It was
definitely a change of atmosphere from the hectic pace of LA. Time slows down
in San Felipe, and we just relaxed.
| | Would
you drive to Mexico again? Yep, always do.
| | What
would you do differently next time? Bring a spare air mattress and a pump.
We forgot our air mattress pump, but were able to fill it at the local Pemex gas
station, but while driving back to our campground, the air mattress flew out of
the truck and the car behind us ran over it - it scared the car behind us, and
the air mattress popped. Luckily this was the last night so we were only uncomfortable
1 night! | |
| | What
words of advice do you have for others driving to Mexico / or others who are driving
to a particular destination? Learn some Spanish, take a map, try not to
drive at night. Watch out for the guy who expects you to pay him for electrocuting
you! This guy walks around with a battery on his belt, and he hooks you up for
fun and expects to get a dollar for testing how much voltage you can handle. My
boyfriend almost fell out of his chair when the guy hooked him up at a restaurant
on the beach...not a good idea.
| | What
were some of the highlights of the trip? We would really like to hear about these!
The more descriptions and details, the better! San Felipe is just such
a nice wide open relaxing palce to just lounge around! The water laps up on the
beach and is nice and warm to wade around in. There was a guy on the beach with
an ultralite airplane who was takiing people for rides...It looked like a great
time, but he charged about $50 per person, and we were on a budget, so we didn't
do it, but maybe next time. The restaurants are also great. Lots of seafood
cocktails. Shopping is fun too.
| | Where
did you sleep? Can you recommend a place to stay? We were on a budget,
and the weather was still nice, so we slept at an RV park in the back of the truck
on an air mattress. I think we paid about $10 per night, and we could use the
showers. | |
| | Can
you recommend any restaurants? I think it was called, 'The Clam Lady'.
As you drive into town, look for the 2 giant whale ribs propped up around the
entrance. This cute little lady steams up fresh clams for you right over a fire.
Really simple and tasty clams, and she is really sweet.
| | Any
other comments...feel free to ramble! Can't wait to go again. I felt safe
in San Felipe, and the people there are very nice. San Felipe is a lot different
than the Pacific side of Baja...a lot more laid back.
